Flood recovery of oyster industry equipment - March 2021
The March 2021 floods have had a devastating impact on the NSW oyster industry.
In many areas land-based depots have been inundated, resulting in costly damage to structures and equipment. On the water, the shear volume and strength of the floods has dislodged cultivation gear. Trees, household items, and other debris flowing down river systems has caused extensive damage and further loss of oyster growing equipment. While the recovery of the gear is important, many farmers are triaging their immediate actions - prioritising the stabilisation of sheds, and securing partially damaged oyster leases to prevent further loss.
Oyster growing equipment is expensive, and the recovery of lost gear is essential to enable the industry to rebuild following this latest disaster. Should anyone in the community come across anything they suspect as oyster growing gear, the industry would be very grateful if you could please follow the regional advice below so that gear can be returned to its rightful owner.
If you are located outside of the regions listed, please contact the NSW Oyster Industry Extension Officer, Laura Stoltenberg on 0456935998 or [email protected], and she will coordinate with local growers for collection. Some images of typical oyster growing equipment are shown at the bottom of this page to support identification.
